This online noncredit course is designed to equip first-time managers and supervisors with the skills they need to succeed in their new roles.

In this six-week online course, you will:

    • Develop the interpersonal skills required to be a successful supervisor
    • Understand different strategies for fostering teamwork, managing conflict and providing critical feedback
    • Learn about yourself and your strengths using the CliftonStrengths Assessment (included with course registration)
    • Understand how to apply those strengths in your new role

While this course is designed for new supervisors and managers who want to be successful in their new roles, it can also help experienced supervisors and managers improve their skills.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a digital certificate of completion from the University of Arizona office of Continuing & Professional Education.

Tom Murray is the Director for Professional Development in Student Success and Retention Innovation (SSRI) at the University of Arizona. Tom works across the units of SSRI to identify and execute professional development opportunities for University staff. He has a Bachelor's degree in mathematics from Loyola University Chicago, a Master's in counseling psychology from Northwestern University, and has completed additional graduate coursework in higher education here at UA.

He also has a number of years of experience working in retail and foodservice prior to working in higher education. He has managed well over 500 people - from part-time student workers to full-time professional staff members with advanced degrees. That experience taught him that successful management is not just about technical proficiency. It is about interpersonal skills. He loves teaching managers and supervisors to excel in their roles.

Cancellations: The office of Continuing & Professional Education reserves the right to cancel or reschedule classes due to low enrollment. If a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to low enrollment, you will be notified at least one week prior to class start date and given the option of a full refund or, in some cases, transferring to a different class.

Refunds: No refunds will be issued after the course start date or once course material has been accessed in any manner, except as described in the Hardship Withdrawal section below.

If you are not able to or no longer wish to take a course, you may request a refund.

If you request a refund prior to the relevant deadline described below, you will be refunded your full registration fee minus a $25 administrative fee.

In some cases, you may also request to transfer to a different class. Participants whose registration fees were paid by a third party (such as state/county workforce development agencies or an employer) may not be eligible for transfers. If you request to transfer to a different class, one transfer is processed at no charge. A $25 administrative fee is applied to subsequent transfer requests.

Deadlines for refund and transfer requests depend on the type of course:

    • For courses with a specific start date, the deadline is three business days before the course starts.
    • For courses without a specific start date, participants have three business days from the date they enrolled to request a refund or transfer.
    • For online courses, no refunds or transfers are available once course material has been accessed in any manner.

Requests for refunds and transfers must be in writing. Submit requests via email to uace-info@email.arizona.edu. You may also mail your request to our office:

    UA Continuing & Professional Education
    1955 East Sixth Street
    Tucson, AZ 85721

Please allow 5-7 business days for credit card refunds and 6-8 weeks for check refunds.

Materials: If course materials are purchased from a third party (including, but not limited to, textbooks, CDs, videos or study guides), it is the student’s responsibility to review and abide by the third party’s refund policies.

Exam Fees: All exam fees are non-refundable. Arrangements to take exams must be made within 6 months of completion of the course. Prices for exams are subject to change without notice.

Hardship Withdrawals: If the deadline to request a refund or transfer has passed and you are unable to complete a course or program due to physical health, mental health or other circumstances beyond your control, you may request a hardship withdrawal. To inquire about a hardship withdrawal, submit requests via email to uace-info@email.arizona.edu.

Withdrawing from a Certificate Program: If you are participating in a multi-course certificate program, requesting a refund from a specific course does not withdraw you from the certificate program. If you want to completely withdraw from a multi-course certificate program, send your request by email to uace-info@email.arizona.edu.

A payment plan option is available for this class.

Students who wish to use this option will have the option of paying a deposit, rather than the full registration fee, during the registration process. Students may pay the remaining balance at their convenience prior to the class start date.

If you choose the Payment Plan Option, you agree to the following:

    - The deposit amount is non-refundable

    - You are responsible for paying any remaining balance due prior to the class start date.

    - If balance is not paid in full prior to the class start date, your registration will be canceled and your payments (less the deposit amount) will be refunded.
