IDEIA requires that assessment procedures for children with suspected disabilities be multifaceted, comprehensive, fair, useful, and valid. For culturally and linguistically diverse children, this includes assessing their level of acculturation in order to select non-discriminatory instruments, and devise culturally responsive interventions. This workshop reviews current literature on acculturation and development; acculturation and assessment considerations; and potential strategies for interventions related to wellbeing and mental health among acculturating student populations. Dr. Carlos O. Calderón from Northern Arizona University will facilitate this session.
The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has outlined Domains of Professional Practice in its Model for Comprehensive and Integrated School Psychological Services. These Domains address the many skills school psychologists are expected to have when practicing in the schools as well as provide a structure to ensure well-rounded training programs and professional development.
This workshop is part of a series that systematically addresses these Domains. Participants will earn three Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits.

Dr. Carlos O. Calderón is an assistant professor at Northern Arizona University, and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Born and raised in Mexico, he completed his undergraduate studies in Riverside, California, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Arizona State University. His areas of interest and expertise include multicultural and bilingual psychology practice; stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination; and assessment and research methodology issues with culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Dr. Calderón has been a regular presenter at the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) annual meeting and has been recognized by the Arizona Association of School Psychologists (AASP), Arizona Psychological Foundation, Arizona Neuropsychological Society, California Association of School Psychologists, among other professional and academic institutions. He currently serves as the Professional Standards Committee chair for AASP, and as a Social Justice Committee member for NASP.
Cancellations: The office of Continuing & Professional Education reserves the right to cancel or reschedule classes due to low enrollment. If a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to low enrollment, you will be notified at least one week prior to class start date and given the option of a full refund or, in some cases, transferring to a different class.
Refunds: No refunds will be issued after the course start date or once course material has been accessed in any manner, except as described in the Hardship Withdrawal section below.
If you are not able to or no longer wish to take a course, you may request a refund. If you request a refund prior to the relevant deadline described below, you will be refunded your full registration fee minus a $25 administrative fee. In some cases, you may also request to transfer to a different class. Participants whose registration fees were paid by a third party (such as state/county workforce development agencies or an employer) may not be eligible for transfers. If you request to transfer to a different class, one transfer is processed at no charge. A $25 administrative fee is applied to subsequent transfer requests. Materials: If course materials are purchased from a third party (including, but not limited to, textbooks, CDs, videos or study guides), it is the student’s responsibility to review and abide by the third party’s refund policies.
Exam Fees: All exam fees are non-refundable. Arrangements to take exams must be made within 6 months of completion of the course. Prices for exams are subject to change without notice.
Hardship Withdrawals: If the deadline to request a refund or transfer has passed and you are unable to complete a course or program due to physical health, mental health or other circumstances beyond your control, you may request a hardship withdrawal. To inquire about a hardship withdrawal, submit requests via email to email@example.com.Withdrawing from a Certificate Program: If you are participating in a multi-course certificate program, requesting a refund from a specific course does not withdraw you from the certificate program.
